Michael Lynn “Mike” Wessels, 69, Lake Shetek, formerly of Luverne, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage in Luverne.
A memorial service was Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. Burial with full military honors provided by the Luverne American Legion and VFW was in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Michael Wessels was born July 18, 1949, to Norman and Joyce (Reemts) Wessels in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1967. Mike later attended Mankato State University. He served his country in Vietnam in the United States Army.
Mike married Carol Van Engelenhoven on Oct. 14, 1972, at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. The couple lived in Luverne. Mike worked at IBP (Iowa Beef Packers) in Luverne before he began working as a custodian at the Luverne Public Schools and also at the First Presbyterian Church. He retired in 2012.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne, the Currie American Legion, and the Luverne Eagles. Mike was an avid fisherman and sports fan. He enjoyed hunting, playing darts, spending time on Lake Shetek and the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Mike is survived by his parents, Norman and Joyce Wessels, Luverne; two children, Christal (Dan) Serie, Luverne, and April Sailor (fiancé Nick Wassenaar), Luverne; seven grandchildren, Carly, Ben, Will and Tori Serie, Lexxus Wessels, and Hazel and Griffin Sailor; a sister, Linda Schoon (fiancé Richard Knapper), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a brother, Mark (Lin) Wessels, Rock Rapids; a niece, Karie Schoon; and two nephews, Aaron (Megan) Schoon and Sam Wessels.
He was preceded in death by his son, Andy Wessels, on Oct. 16, 2012, and a granddaughter, Lucie Sailor, on March 29, 2008.
