Melvin Ray DeGroot, 63, Spencer, Iowa, died Feb. 4, 2017, in the outdoors.
A funeral service was Thursday, Feb. 9, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. Burial was at the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Melvin DeGroot was born June 9, 1953, to George and Florence (Smeins) DeGroot in Luverne. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1971 and from Morningside College in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and library science. Mel started his teaching career in the Anthon-Oto School District. He taught math and science in the middle school of Graettinger-Terril Community School District in Northwest Iowa for over 15 years.
Mel’s favorite pastime was hunting and spending time with his hunting dogs.
Mel will be remembered for his positive attitude, being quick with a joke and always trying to make everyone's day a little better.
He is survived by his children, Megan, Wichita, Kansas, Nicki, Minneapolis, and Jud (Grace), Wichita, Kansas; a sister, Vickie (Mike) Sorn, Cambridge, his former wife, Dorothy, and dogs Rocky and Gus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brothers, George (Bud) and Larry.
