Dr. Marvin S. Dale, 96, Yankton, South Dakota, formerly of Sun City West, Arizona, and Luverne, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
A graveside service will be later this spring at the Kenyon Cemetery in Kenyon.
Marvin Dale was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Brinsmade, North Dakota, to the Rev. Stephen and Louise (Foss) Dale. He lived in many different areas as a child, with his father presiding in many congregations, including locations in Montana from 1921-1925; Bonnie’s Ferry, Idaho, (June 1925-1927); Roslyn, South Dakota, in 1927, where he then attended grade school. In 1933 his family moved to St. James, where Marvin graduated in 1938.
For the next three years he attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, and then transferred to the University of Minnesota Dental School, graduating in 1944. He passed his dental boards in August of 1944.
Marvin moved to Luverne in 1945 when he bought Dr. Charles Brown’s dental practice. He began his practice in May of that year. He married Marcia Berg on June 12, 1946, in Kenyon.
In August of 1953 Marvin was reactivated to the armed forces as a second lieutenant and joined the Air Force until August 1955, at which time he returned to his practice in Luverne. He retired from his work in 1984 and moved to Sun City West, Arizona, in 1988. Marcia died Dec. 23, 1991. In 2002 Marvin met Carla Cox, and they remained together until his move to Yankton, South Dakota, in 2012.
During his life, Marvin enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, pheasant hunting and fishing. He spent most of his life fishing on Clitherall Lake near Battle Lake in the summers.
Marvin is survived by two sons, Richard (Kimberle) Dale, Yankton, and Dr. Allan Dale (special friend Maureen ‘Mo’ Davidson), Signal Mountain, Tennessee; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his very special friend, Carla Cox.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcia; and his brothers Lester (Glee), Oscar (Teddy), Otto (Janet) and infant twins.
