Marie Walraven, 96, Hills, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service was Friday, Feb. 22, at Beaver Creek First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. Burial followed at Flower Field Cemetery in rural Hills.
Marie Barents was born Dec. 12, 1922, to John and Jennie (Levering) Barents in Ireton, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Ireton High School in 1941. After graduation she worked as a telephone operator.
Marie married Henry Walraven on Oct. 5, 1943. Together they farmed north of Ireton. In 1954 the family moved to Hills.
Marie loved raising flowers and gardening. She enjoyed volunteering at Hope Haven and Tuff Memorial Home. She worked at Tuff Memorial Home, helped at Wally's Nursery and served on the Rock County Rural Water Board. She was involved in Hills Community Club and an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Creek.
She is survived by three children, Robert (Shirley) Walraven of Hills, Sandra (Gene) Smiraldo of Findlay, Ohio, and Delwyn Walraven of Hills; six grandchildren, Steven Smiraldo of Washington, D.C., Keith Walraven of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Phillip (Elaine) Smiraldo of Findlay, Ohio, Sara (Mark) Dodge of Hartley, Iowa, Nicolas (Jess) Walraven of Lakeside, Arizona, and Lee (Quinn) Walraven of Onalaska, Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Henry Walraven; her son, Terry Walraven; four brothers, John, Gerrit, Julius and Edward Barents; and one sister, Jacoba Nelson. 
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for Marie’s favorite mission projects.
