Pearl “Marie” Brown, 79, Hills, died Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A private graveside memorial service for family was Saturday, June 18, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Hills.
Pearl “Marie” Hiney was born Feb. 4, 1943, in Windom to William and Pearl (Sogge) Hiney. She grew up in Valley Springs, South Dakota, and attended Valley High School.
On June 16, 1961, Marie married Darrell Brown at Valley Springs Lutheran Church in Valley Springs. They were blessed with three children, Darrell, Michelle and Sandra. The couple lived in Valley Springs, Sioux Falls, and made their long-term home in Hills. During this time Marie worked at K-Products in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Tuff Memorial Home and as a custodian for the Hills Beaver Creek High School, retiring after 26 years.
Marie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was active with the Ladies Circle and the Hills Extension Ladies Club. Marie enjoyed square dancing in her earlier years with her husband. She also enjoyed crocheting, caring for her flowers, tending houseplants and feeding the birds.
Marie cherished family gatherings and preparing meals. She had a kind heart and strong values.
Marie is survived by her three children, Darrell (Cindy) Brown of Sioux Falls, Shelly (Vince) Swenson of Luverne and Sandra Brown of Mankato; four grandchildren, Casey (Lindsey) Swenson of Brandon, South Dakota, Katie (Jesse) Petersen of Luverne, Camio (Chris) Kolhoff of Sioux Falls, and Cody (Lexi) Kelly of Sioux Falls; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Wayne Ward of Hills; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 1/2 years, Darrell Brown; her parents; and siblings Richard Hiney, Janice Ward and William Hiney.
