Mavis Loretta Berkhof, 81, Steen, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Hospice Cottage in Luverne.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 24, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., all at the Reformed Church of Steen. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery near Steen.
Mavis Loretta Sanderson was born Dec. 10, 1935, to George and Gladys (Rollag) Sanderson at her parents’ home in Steen. She was baptized on March 30, 1936. She attended primary school in Steen and graduated from Hills High School in Hills in 1953.
On Jan. 6, 1955, Mavis married Bastian Berkhof at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Steen. The couple lived on the farm. Their first daughter, Valerie Renae, died on Feb. 3, 1959. The couple was then blessed with six more children. Mavis loved being a mother, homemaker and farm wife. Her husband died on June 14, 2009. She continued to reside on the farm.
Mavis was a member of the Steen Reformed Church in Steen. She loved cooking and sitting down for family meals. Mavis was a talented seamstress and sewed clothes for her children and doll clothes for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and cross stitch.
Mavis is survived by her children, Susan (Jim) Clark, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lori (David) Deragisch, Luverne, Melanie (Merle) Boeve, Clive, Iowa, Bradley (Carey) Berkhof, Sioux Falls, Jeffrey (Jill) Berkhof, Hudson, Wisconsin, and Gregory Berkhof, Minneapolis; 15 grandchildren, Travis (Lindsey) Clark, Jesse Clark, Brent Clark, Danielle (Nathan) Wright, Brandon (Lyndsie) Deragisch, Kaitlyn (Michael) Strassburg, Hilary Deragisch, Jameson Boeve, Kylie Boeve, Jayden Berkhof, Hannah Berkhof, Benjamin Berkhof, Jordan Hulstein, Cody Hulstein, and Halle Hoekstra; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Noreen Berkhof, Lakewood, California; and a sister-in-law, Judy Berkhof, Mitchell, South Dakota; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bastian; a daughter, Valerie Berkhof; her parents; and a sister, Gwendolyn Harsh.
