Lorraine Van Nieuwenhuizen, 83, Luverne, died Monday, July 13, 2020, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.
Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. A graveside funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne. Attendees are asked to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines.
Lorraine Verbrugge was born on Oct. 29, 1936, to James and Jennie (Jongetjes) Verbrugge in Leota. She attended Leota Christian Grade School and graduated from Southwest Christian High School in Edgerton.
On Oct. 27, 1955, Lorraine married Donald Van Nieuwenhuizen at the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota. The couple lived in Edgerton for more than a year and then moved to Luverne. Lorraine was a homemaker and mother to their two children, Randy and Darla, and later in life she enjoyed working part time for Mulder Auctions.
Lorraine was a member of the Luverne Christian Reformed Church. Music played an important role in her life. She played piano and accordion, sang in a ladies’ trio for many years, and served as a church organist for 40 years at the Luverne Christian Reformed Church.
Lorraine enjoyed nature, especially bird watching, camping with her family and friends, flowers, embroidering work and knitting. Over the years she made many afghans for gifts and donation sales.
Lorraine is survived by a son, Randy (Sara) Van Nieuwenhuizen of Luverne; a sister, Elizabeth Van’t Hof of Leota; a brother, Dr. James (Marcia) Verbrugge of Watkinsville, Georgia; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in 2013; a daughter, Darla Joy, in 1991; her parents; a sister, Marie Schelhaas; two brothers-in-law, Tony Van’t Hof and Bert Schelhaas; two nephews and a niece.
