Lois Tecken, 94, Steen, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at Ava’s Hopsice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service was Saturday, Nov. 21, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Luverne. Interment followed at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Lois Mae Emme was born on March 6, 1926, to Fred and Selma (Sommerfeld) Emme in Tripp, South Dakota. She attended school in Tripp, graduating from Tripp High School in 1944. She continued her education at a business school in Mankato. She then moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and took an accounting position at John Morrell & Company.
Lois married Alfred Tecken on May 22, 1955, at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. They made their home on Alfred’s family’s farm south of Steen. Lois worked alongside Alfred on the farm and was a homemaker and mother as well as caring for Alfred’s parents. Lois and Alfred retired from farming in 1988 but remained active on the farm and helped where they were able. Alfred died on Feb. 27, 1993. Lois continued to live on the farm until her brief stay at Ava’s Hospice House.
Lois was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Luverne. She was known for her kindness and was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking and spent many hours canning and freezing produce from her garden. She also enjoyed sewing. She loved to dance and play cards with her friends.
Lois is survived by three children, Douglas (Ronna) Tecken of George, Iowa, Michele (Ronald) Stewart of Rock Rapids, and Steven (Brenda) Tecken of Rock Rapids; six grandchildren, Rebeka (Rev. Nicholas) Proksch, Benjaminn (Victoria) Tecken, Annalise Tecken, Adam (Isabella) Tecken, Daniel (Chrissie) Stewart and Andrew Stewart; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; her parents; two brothers, Harold and Howard Emme; and a sister, Joan Cramer.
