Lena Wiertzema, 95, Ellsworth, died Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center.
A funeral service was Monday, July 6, at the Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth, with burial at the Grand Prairie Cemetery in Ellsworth.
Lena DeBoer was born Sept. 30, 1924, to Hilko and Anna DeBoer at home in rural Ellsworth. She attended school in Ellsworth.
Lena married Herman Wiertzema on Dec. 6, 1944, in Rushmore. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Little Rock, Iowa. In 1950 they had their only son, David. They moved to the farm two miles east of Ellsworth in 1963. They retired and moved into Ellsworth in 1998.
Lena was a lifelong member of the Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth and the Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed her flowers, watching the Minnesota Twins, bird watching, bowling, cooking and baking. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Lena is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jerre Wiertzema, Adrian; three grandchildren, Brian (Mandy) Wiertzema, rural Ellsworth, Carolyn (Jason) Krapfl, Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin, and Jill (Chris) Wolf, Adrian; eight great-grandchildren, Olivia, Daniel and Emily Krapfl, Quentin, Anastasia, Caleb and Cyrus Wolf, and Clara Wiertzema; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.     
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, on Sept. 8, 2008; her parents; her son, Dave Wiertzema, on Jan. 26, 2018; a brother, Harm DeBoer; and two sisters, Fannie Mulder and Jennie Janssen.
