Kenneth Nelson, 87, Aurora, Colorado, formerly of Luverne, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015.
A celebration of life service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Heather Gardens Community Center. There will also be a celebration of life and burial at 5 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Luverne.
Kenneth Nelson was born Nov. 26, 1927, to George and Lulu (Gertz) Nelson in Luverne. He graduated from Luverne High School and from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed at Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan, with the Army Medical Corps and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1947.
On Nov. 19, 1950, he married Shirley Wiese. They raised their family in three different towns in Minnesota, one town in Nebraska, one in South Dakota and two in Iowa before settling down in Aurora.
Ken was active at Aurora First Presbyterian and the Heather Gardens Chapel. He volunteered at the Heather Gardens Community Center. He enjoyed dominos and round table discussions.
Kenneth is survived by his children, Kristine Nelson, Bradley (Robin) Nelson, Brett (Pam) Nelson, and Sara (Bob Leonard) Nelson; seven grandchildren, Samantha (Sean) Duggan, Joseph Nelson, Meghann (Tyler Allen) Reini, Zachary (Natalie Jencks) Rieni, Ashley Nelson, Kyle (Crissy) Reini, Paige Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Connor Duggan and Graham Allen; a sister-in-law, Marge Nelson; and many other relatives and friends.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Nelson; his parents; and a brother, Darwin George Nelson.
