John Hup, age 90, of Luverne, Minnesota, died Monday, February 5, 2024, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.

Funeral service was Tuesday, February 13, at 2:30 p.m., with visitation at 1 p.m., all at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. Burial with military honors followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne. Arrangements were under the care of Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. John Hup Jr. was born to John Sr. and Annie (Fikse) Hup on February 19, 1933, in Steen, Minnesota. He was baptized at the Steen Reformed Church. The family moved to California later that year and John attended elementary school in California. The Hup family returned to Rock County in 1944 and settled in the Hills, Minnesota area. John attended Hills High School graduating in 1950. He met and later on December 3, 1952, married the love of his life, Alvina Hoogeveen in the Steen Reformed Church. The couple made their first home in Steen, Minnesota. Only five months into their marriage, duty called and John left the farm for the Korean War. After serving his country for two years, John was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and returned home to Alvina in April of 1955. The couple settled into a busy life on the farm. John worked the land and helped to raise their three boys, Steve, Ken, and Dave. In 1982, after thirty years of farming, John retired and the couple moved to Luverne, Minnesota. During the late 1970s and most of the 1980s John helped out at Engebretson Funeral Home in Luverne. He also worked part-time at Papik Motors and enjoyed attending the events of his grandchildren.

On Monday, February 5, 2024, John died peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 17 days.

John was a longtime member of Steen Reformed Church and later, the American Reformed Church in Luverne. He served both as deacon and elder and sang in the church choir.

John will be lovingly remembered by his children, Ken (Sue) Hup, Dave (Teresa) Hup, all of Luverne, and Debbie (Russ) Hup Larsen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Andrea (Dusty) Kovarna, Lindsay (Steve) Ruda, Mitch (Sara) Hup, Breanne (Jesse) Haller, Matt (Cori) Hup, Daniel (Maria) Hup, Michael (Rebecca) Hup, Bethany (Cory) Tilstra; seventeen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Hoogeveen of Brandon, South Dakota, and Inez Hoogeveen of Le Mars, Iowa; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Art (Carol) Hoogeveen of Prior Lake, Minnesota and Ray (Joan) Hoogeveen of Luverne; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. John was preceded in death by his wife, Alvina; his son, Steven; parents, John Sr. and Annie; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Gert Hup; and brothers-in-law, Alvin and Don Hoogeveen.
