John Gust Hoiland, 80, formerly of Luverne, died Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Sanford Centennial Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service was Wednesday, May 31, at George Boom Funeral Home and Crematory in Sioux Falls.
John Hoiland was born May 8, 1937, to Ole and Hazel (Swensen) Hoiland in Luverne. He grew up and received his education there. John then worked for Luverne area farmers.
John married Betty (Groninga) Prestin on Aug. 22, 1958, in Jackson. The couple made their home in Adrian. John entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 2, 1960, at Sioux Falls. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 1, 1962, at Fort Hood, Texas. John returned to Adrian and worked for Hanson Silo. John and Betty later moved to Lakefield and then to Sioux Falls in 1977. John drove truck for Midwest Coast, All American Freight, and John Morrell and Company before retiring.
John enjoyed gardening and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three stepsons, Jim (Linda) Prestin, Sioux Falls, Jerry (Mary) Prestin, Lakefield, and Jon Prestin, Belle Plaine; a special friend, Tammy Prestin, Prior Lake; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Roy Hoiland, Luverne, Norma (Glen) Walters, Sioux Falls, and Deanna (Dave) Dawson, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Schmucker; and a sister, Judy Hoiland.
