James Gilmore Sandstede, 76, Luverne, died Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.
A time of fellowship was Sunday, June 27, at the Dingmann Funeral Home. A private graveside service will take place at a later date.
James Sandstede was born March 29, 1945, to Melvin and Florence (Taubert) Sandstede in Luverne. He graduated from Hills High School in 1963. Growing up, James learned to be a mechanic from his father who owned his own full-service station in Steen.
James joined the U.S. Navy following high school graduation. He served during the Vietnam War in several positions while serving on the assigned aircraft carrier after he completed his required training. He progressed through the ranks steadily until it was time for his discharge from the service. He was offered the opportunity for promotion to the rank of sergeant if he would stay for another tour, but he chose to take the honorable discharge and return home.
James married Geraldine Top 0n May 20, 1967. They had four sons, Chad, Wade, Donny and Danny, who all kept them busy and always on their toes.
James worked for Luverne Farm Store and later Ferrell Gas for many years before he started his own business. He worked for the Luverne Police Department for several years as a reserve officer.
James enjoyed racing and working on race cars for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and just being outdoors. He also liked working with his hands, especially woodworking and fixing anything.
James is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Luverne; three sons, Chad of Alaska, Wade (Kathleen) of Maple Grove and Donny (Erin) Sandstede of Luverne; and three brothers, Larry, Merlyn and Kevin Sandstede.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Danny.
