Herman Leonard Buys, 85, Hardwick, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital in Luverne.
A funeral service was Monday, Nov. 2, at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Herman Buys was born on May 10, 1935, to John and Johanna (Wiekeraad) Buys on the farm by Chandler. He was baptized at the Chandler Reformed Church and attended country school through the eighth grade, both in Chandler. In 1951 Herman was a hired man for his Uncle Bill until he purchased his own farm near Hardwick in 1963.
On Oct. 25, 1963, Herman married Dorothy Harms at the First Reformed Church in Inwood, Iowa. They made their home on the farm place, milking cows and farming the land. Herman lived on the farm for the remainder of his life. Dorothy died on March 21, 2017.
Herman was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne. He was a member of the Men’s Brotherhood and Hardwick Community Club. He and Dorothy enjoyed pulling the Hardwick float through many parades. Herman also enjoyed bowling, fixing puzzles (many times in the hayloft), going to auctions, especially toy sales to collect White and Oliver tractors, and listening to South Dakota Old Time Fiddlers. He enjoyed drives through the countryside, eating at the Green Lantern and having coffee with friends in Hardwick and Kenneth.
Herman is survived by his children, Leann (Dave) Hoogland of Hardwick and Melroy (Laura) Buys of Edgerton; five grandchildren Chelsey (Alex) Huisken, Cole Hoogland, Jessica, Miranda and Kayla Buys; two great-grandchildren, Beckett and Greyli Huisken; siblings LeRoy (Patsy) Buys of Chandler and Linda (Bob) Schelhaas of Edgerton; sisters-in-law Berdena Buys, Donna Buys and Genevieve Vis; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy his parents; a sister, Anna Gorter; and brothers Gerald, Edward and Melvin.
