Grace Wassenaar, 102, of Hills died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, at Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service was Monday, Sept. 30, at Steen Reformed Church in Steen. Burial was in East Side Cemetery in Steen.
Grace Wassenaar was born July 6, 1917, in northwest Iowa to Gerrit and Jenny (Ten Haken) Bosch. She received her education at the District #43 country school. She was raised on a farm in the Luverne area.
On Jan. 24, 1939 she was united in marriage to William Wassenaar at her parents’ home near Luverne. They made their home on a farm by Hills where they raised their family. To this union six children were born.
Grace and her husband worked side by side on the farm raising their family until William passed away in 1967 after a brief illness at the age of 58. Grace went to work as a nurse’s aide at Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
Grace was known as a hard worker in addition to being a kind, devoted mother and grandmother.
She was a lifelong member of the Steen Reformed Church, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by her daughters, Gladys (Jake) Schelhaas of Jasper, Betty (Jerry) Ackerman of Hills, Bonnie (Dave) Shelton of Luverne, and Nelva (Ron) Behr of Hills; 16 grandchildren, two step- grandchildren; 34 great- grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Vivian Bosch and Mona Rozeboom; nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Wassenaar; son, Gerrit “Sam” Wassenaar; daughter, Beverly Ann Wassenaar; brothers, William, Dries, Gerald, Marvin and Arthur.
