Gilbert Howard Smedsrud, 98, Garretson, South Dakota, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at Palisade Healthcare Center in Garretson.
A funeral service was Tuesday, Oct. 27, at George Boom Funeral Chapel in Brandon, South Dakota. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Valley Springs, South Dakota.
Gilbert Smedsrud was born on July 22, 1922, to Edward and Minnie (Hanson) Smedsrud in Garretson, South Dakota. He attended school in Hills and later joined the U.S. Army.
He married Patricia Kock on March 3, 1960, in Garretson. Gilbert was an auto mechanic for over 43 years and was well known in the area for his mechanic skills. He retired in 1984, and he and Pat lived in Valley Springs. He especially enjoyed the three-season porch where he could enjoy the newspapers, have coffee and watch birds, squirrels and people going by. He enjoyed his grandchildren and sharing his homemade soup specialties and pancakes. He loved Norwegian specialties, especially lefse and lutefisk.
Gilbert is survived by his daughter, Kim Morgan of Valley Springs; son Howard Smedsrud of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sons Dave (Sharon) Kock of Sioux Falls and Mike (Sheri) Schumacher of Valley Springs; eight grandchildren, Damon (Krystal) Sehr, Kayleen (Adam) Lane, Jared Sehr, Kellie Smedsrud, Aubrey (Dave) Sanderson, Matt Sauers, Dani Schumacher and Christian Volk; many great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia, on April 21, 2019; three brothers and six sisters.
