Gary D. Frakes, DVM, 69, Magnolia, Texas, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, under hospice care.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 22, with gathering of family and friends beginning at 1 p.m. at the Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Gary Frakes was born Jan. 4, 1948, to Marion and Marie (Van Hunnick) Frakes in Adrian. He grew up in Luverne and graduated from Luverne High School in 1966. He attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1974.
Gary worked as a state or track veterinarian at many racetracks around the country and spent the last 16 years at Texas racetracks in Houston and Dallas. He retired in Magnolia, Texas, where he bred, raised and raced thoroughbred racehorses. He was an avid stock market investor, enjoyed keeping up with his nieces and nephew, and was always improving his ranch in Magnolia. Gary made a large endowment to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine to benefit equine research and care.
Gary is survived by his mother, Marie Frakes, of Luverne; his brother Michael (Julie) Frakes of New Brighton; a nieces, Nicole and Sarah; a nephew, Matthew (fianceé Sara); and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Frakes, and his sister, Laura Frakes.
Memorial donations will be made to cancer research.
