Elmer August Metzger, 96, Larchwood, Iowa, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service was Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, Iowa. Burial was at the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery in Lester.
Elmer Metzger was born Oct. 11, 1918, to Fred and Karoline (Knobloch) Metzger on a farm near Larchwood.
On Sept. 24, 1940, he married Mariann Moser in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He farmed north of Lester from 1940 to 1948. In 1948 they moved three miles north and one mile east of Larchwood, where he lived until 1992. In 1992 they moved to Lester, where they remained until he became a resident of Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church of Lester and was a Sunday school teacher for 14 years. He had served on the Farmers Mutual Insurance board in Hull, Iowa, and Farmers Co-op Elevator board in Larchwood.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Mariann Metzger, Hills; five sons, James (Lois) Metzger, Hills, Gary (Beth) Metzger, Larchwood, Ray (Kathy) Metzger, Brandon, South Dakota, Don (Pat) Metzger, Hills, and Arlyn (Nancy) Metzger, Larchwood; a son-in-law, Lynn “Butch” (Kathleen) Doorneweerd, Lester; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy (Evelyn) Metzger, Bloomfield, Iowa; two sisters, Lydiann (Carl) Wyss and Pearline Streitmatter, all of Washington, Illinois; two brothers-in-law, Andy Mogler, Eureka, Illinois, and Russell Wuthrich, Bloomfield; three sisters-in-law, Alice Metzger, Alvord, Iowa, Esty Metzger, Hills, and Donna Metzger, Rock Rapids, Iowa; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Marlys Doorneweerd; a grandson, James Metzger; a great-granddaughter, Kaylon Metzger; seven brothers and three sisters.
