Edward Hartog, 87, died Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento, California.
A funeral service was Monday, July 11, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights, California. Burial followed at Fair Oaks Cemetery in Fair Oaks, California.
Edward Claus Hartog was born on Nov. 25, 1934, to Wubbo and Emma Hartog at their home in Kanaranzi. He was baptized and confirmed in the faith on Oct. 7, 1951, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills.
Ed became an orphan at the age of four. His siblings were separated and lived with various relatives in the Adrian area during the Depression. Ed excelled at school and developed a strong work ethic, laboring on rural farms at a young age.
Ed eventually became a ward of the county and entered the foster care system. At age 14, he began living with Victor and Frances Sandager on their farm in Hills, and he maintained a close relationship with them his entire life. He graduated from high school in 1952 with honors.
Ed attended the University of Minnesota at St. Paul and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education in 1956. In 1957 he began teaching vocational agriculture. In 1963 he implemented a vocational agriculture program at Willmar Community College in Willmar, for which he received recognition. The program is still in operation today.
In 1969 Ed completed his doctorate degree at the University of Minnesota and was awarded a PhD.
Ed retired from teaching and pursued a career in recreational vehicle sales, which brought him to California. He retired at 74.
Ed and his wife, Linda, traveled extensively. Ed also enjoyed working on genealogy and was a voracious reader. He loved working in the yard, especially tending his roses.
Ed also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities as often as he could.
Edward is survived by his wife, Linda; a son, Craig (Laura) Hartog; three daughters, Joni (Anthony) Rivera, Nancy (Scott) Ryan, and Deborah Wiest; sisters Susie McMartin and Jane (Daryl) Schubert; brothers John Sandager, Mark (Karen) Sandager, and James (Louisa) Sandager; granddaughters Tiffany (Dave) McEntire, Alexandra (Ben) Moyer, and Kelsey Rivera; grandsons Craig Hartog Jr., Blake Rivera, and Dane Hartog; and five great-grandchildren.
