Dorothy Williamson

Dorothy Mavis Reese Williamson, 91, Garretson, South Dakota, died on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Garretson.

Dorothy Reese was born on Jan. 3, 1926, to Emil and Meta (Burmeister) Reese near Sherman, South Dakota, in Rock County, Minnesota. She was baptized on March 3, 1926, and confirmed on May 28, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper and attended District 45 Country School in Rock County. She graduated from Garretson High School and then attended General Beadle Teacher’s College in Madison, South Dakota. She taught for two years in District 126 (1944-1945) and MN School (1945-1946).

On June 14, 1946, Dorothy married Elmo Williamson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Sioux Falls while Elmo worked for Nash Finch. They then settled in Springwater Township, Rock County, where they farmed until moving into Garretson on Oct. 8, 2005. Elmo died on May 15, 2008. Dorothy then moved to Jasper Sunrise Village in 2013 and finally to the Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne in 2014.

Dorothy was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was active in the Ladies Aid and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Polled Hereford Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a 4-H Club Leader and enjoyed her neighborhood birthday club. She loved sewing, knitting, entertaining, and golfing and recorded a hole-in-one in Brandon. She enjoyed traveling with Elmo to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and Norway and spending many winters in Mesa, Arizona.

She is survived by her children Eileen (Floyd) Swier, Wetonka, South Dakota, Wayne (Jolene) Williamson, Yankton, South Dakota, Stan (Karen) Williamson, Garretson, and Mary (Jerry) Blankers, Lake Wilson; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Vernon (Phyllis) Williamson, Anoka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmo; siblings Helen (Howard) Winstead and Donald Reese; and her brother-in-law, Perry (Shirley) Williamson.
