Dorothy Ask, 94, Kenneth, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton.
A funeral service was Monday, Jan. 4, at Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Dorothy Selma Hunsdal was born Nov. 26, 1921, to Samuel and Anna Dorthea (Dora) Sahn Hunsdal. She was born prematurely on her parents’ farm near Kenneth in Vienna Township. She was baptized at home July 11, 1922. The family attended Kenneth Lutheran Church. After her mother’s death when Dorothy was five, she left the Hunsdal family farm and lived with the neighbors, John and Lulu Remme. She was confirmed in 1935 at Blue Mound Lutheran Church. She attended and graduated from country school near Kenneth in 1939 and went on to attend the two-year ag program at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Dorothy returned to Vienna Township and married James Ask on Aug. 30, 1941, at the Blue Mound Lutheran Church near Luverne. The young couple settled into life on the farm and raised their three children there. Dorothy stayed on the farm until Jim’s death in 2005 when she moved to the Oaks in Luverne. She eventually moved to the Poplar Creek apartments and later to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton.
Dorothy was active in her church life at Blue Mound Lutheran. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, youth group leader and a member of the church choir. Dorothy also served as a 4-H leader and helped with the Magnolia Red Cross Blood Bank. She loved music and enjoyed sewing. Dorothy and her husband were members of the Sons of Norway and the Holiday Rambler Club. As a couple they belonged to the bowling league in Luverne, a couple’s card club, and enjoyed dancing. They spent winters in both Arizona and Texas in their later years.
Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Doris Nelson, Kenneth, and Cherylee Ask, Cold Spring; a son, Loren (Lucille) Ask, Kenneth; her grandchildren, Pendra (Edward) Bell, Nelson Bell, Lori (Stan) Ask Witte, Leslie (Rachel) Ask, and LeRoy (Laura) Ask; and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ask; her parents, Sam and Dora (Sohn) Hundsal; her adoptive parents, John and Lula Remme; two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn (Stan) Garrison, and Sonia (Aldberto) De la Peno; and brothers and sisters-in-law Charles (Arley) Ask, Evelyn Grayson, Grace Kinley, and Hans (Amelia) Ask.
