Dorothea Marie Huiskes, 91, Luverne, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.
A funeral service was Saturday, May 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne.
Dorothea Kurtz was born Aug. 25, 1923, to William and Anna (Holst) Kurtz on the family farm south of Luverne. She was baptized Sept. 16, 1923, and confirmed Sept. 6, 1936, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Steen. She attended District No. 3 country school through eighth grade when she left to help on the family farm.
On Feb. 14, 1946, she married Alvin Huiskes at the St. John Lutheran Church parsonage after Alvin returned home from serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. They made their home in Luverne and raised a family of nine children. After 26 years of marriage, Alvin died on April 25, 1972. Dorothea devoted her life to helping others, working at the Good Samaritan Society and Mary Jane Brown Home for more than 15 years. In 1974 she began working at the Luverne Community Hospital where she was employed for 32 years until her retirement in August 2006. On March 23, 2015, she was diagnosed with cancer, and she began receiving care at Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage on April 27.
She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Luverne. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, working on puzzles, going for rides, camping, vacations and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
Dorothea is survived by eight children, Dianna (Glen) Malmquist, David (Shirley) Huiskes, Darla (Keith) Schmuck, Donna (Lon) Remme and Dawn (Dan) Dewispelaere, all of Luverne, Marcia (Don) Bork, Beaver Creek, Jim (Mary) Huiskes, Northfield, and Kathy (Jeff) Wilsey, Brandon, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Anna Huiskes, Luverne; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; a sister, Millie Roberson, Norfolk, Virginia; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin Huiskes; a son, Darrell Huiskes; a great-granddaughter, Faith Hoogeveen; and a grandson-in-law, Steven Watts.
