Doris Alberta Plahn, 98, Garretson, South Dakota, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016, at Palisades Manor in Garretson.
A celebration of life will be at the family farm in 2017 with burial and private service at Norway Cemetery in rural Garretson.
Doris Engelson was born Aug. 30, 1918, to Roy and Bessie (Kuiper) Engelson in Rock County. She attended country schools in Rock and Minnehaha counties and was a 1936 graduate of Garretson High School. Doris then worked in housekeeping for various families in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and as a clerk for Montgomery Ward.
On Dec. 3, 1940, Doris married Donald Plahn at Beaver Creek. They lived in Sioux Falls before locating to a rural Garretson property farmed by Doris’ parents. They made their home at his parents’ farm in Section 5 of Edison Township west of Garretson, where they remained for most of their lives. Doris was a homemaker and helped on the farm.
In retirement the couple wintered in Sun City, Arizona, for many years until Donald died in 1997. Doris resided at Edgewood Vista senior apartments in Sioux Falls since 2003. She will be remembered for wonderful meals, cookies jars filled with love, and storytime on Grandma’s lap.
She is survived by her sister, Elaine Pomeroy, St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; her children, Sharon (Grant) Kringen, Garretson, Barbara (Steven) Lemke, Paullina, Iowa, Mary Koehler, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Donald (Deborah Beers) Plahn, Jasper, Jill (James) Willers, Luverne, James (Beth Engebretson) Plahn, Garretson, and Darcy (Royal) Ellefson, Garretson; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three infant children, (David, deceased shortly after birth and twin daughters deceased at birth); brothers LeRoy and Marvin Engelson; one grandson; and two great-grandsons.
