Donald “Don” Gene Schellhouse was born January 14, 1943, in Luverne, Minnesota, to Harry and Olga (Salmonson) Schellhouse. Don grew up in Hills, Minnesota, and graduated from Hills High School in 1961. After high school, he attended Stewart School of Cosmetology. After graduation and while teaching at the school, Don met the love of his life, Donna Rae Reining. They were united in marriage on July 13, 1963. This union was blessed with two children.
Don traveled the Midwest presenting at hair shows before changing careers. He worked in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as a salesman for Haber’s Carpets and Reynolds Furniture. He went on to work for Scorpion, Inc. selling snowmobiles throughout the region where he was recognized as a top salesman for the company. Don was an accomplished artist, selling his art and attending art shows through much of his life. In 1987, after moving to the Black Hills, Don was employed at Black Hills Special Services Coop, Inc. in Rapid City. He and Donna then moved to Sturgis to be foster parents caring for those with disabilities in a home setting. Don loved to go antiquing with his wife, Donna. They became certified antique appraisers for the Black Hills region.
     Don’s greatest joy was collecting antiques and Indian artifacts. He took great pride in the knowledge and historical background of each and every item. He beamed with excitement when telling stories about his “old stuff” to all his family and friends. Don had a very big heart and cared deeply for all those he met.
Don, 76, of Sturgis, South Dakota, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019, surrounded by his family.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Ginger (Dan) Niemann of Pierre, South Dakota; granddaughter, Carly Niemann of Rapid City, South Dakota; brother, Duane (Janice) Schellhouse of Sioux Falls; sister, Janyce Richards of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Olga; wife, Donna; son, Jason; and brother, Dale.
     Funeral services were held on Friday, December 27, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Kris Garlick officiating. Burial followed at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
