Dolores Melton
Dolores Cleone Melton, 90, Holland, Michigan, and formerly of Beaver Creek, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at Rest Haven Care Center in Holland.
A funeral service was Friday, Oct. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. Burial followed at the Beaver Creek Cemetery.
Dolores VanderSchaaf was born Aug. 19, 1925, to Ralph and Nellie (Olivier) VanderSchaaf in Hull, Iowa, where she was raised. In 1943 she began her service in the United States Army Nurse Cadet Corp and served her country during World War II until its end.
On Sept. 2, 1949, Dolores married Robert L. Melton Jr. at the American Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Grand Haven, Michigan, in 1952 and then later to Ft. Wayne, Indiana. In 1968 Dolores and Robert moved to Beaver Creek. During her life Dolores worked as a nurse for 40 years. She also served as the Rock and Nobles county health nurse for 20 of those years. Robert preceded her in death on March 14, 2000. Dolores continued to reside in their home until 2003, when she moved to Holland to be closer to family.
Dolores was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek. She loved her nursing career and the opportunity to help all people. She especially enjoyed holding the babies. She also enjoyed playing cards, shopping, needlework, knitting, crocheting and embroidering. She loved Christmas and especially angels.
Dolores is survived by her daughter, Ranelle Melton, Holland; a brother, Ron VanderSchaaf, Holland; two grandchildren, Katie Melton (Allen Mehr), Oahu, Hawaii, and Neal Melton, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Connie Melton, Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a son, Robert L. Melton III; her parents; and a sister, Carolyn Crawford.
