Christina ‘Toots’ Van Iperen

Christina “Toots” Van Iperen, 97, Luverne, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.

A funeral service was Monday, June 18, at the American Reformed Church in Luverne. Burial followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery near Luverne.

Christina De Jongh was born April 30, 1921, to Charley and Ada (Enkhorn) De Jongh in Hull, Iowa. Throughout her life she was affectionately known as “Toots.” She was baptized at the First Reformed Church in Hull. She attended school in Boyden, Iowa, through the eighth grade.

On Oct. 18, 1945, Toots married Nickolas Van Iperen in her parents’ home in Luverne. The couple made their first home in Lester, Iowa. In 1947 they moved to a farm near Ash Creek, where they raised their four daughters and farmed until retiring in 1981 and moving to Luverne. Toots continued to live in their home after Nick entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in 1998. In February of 2014, Toots became a resident of the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills. In 2016 Toots became a resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home.

Toots was a charter member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne and was active in the Mary Circle for 45 years. She was active with the County Extension Club and the Senior Citizens Center and loved playing bingo and interacting with friends. Having coffee with her daughters and going out with their families and her brothers and their families were special times for all.  

Toots is survived by four daughters, Charlene (Jon) Hovland of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Larinda (Doug) Braun of Sun Lakes, Arizona, LaDonna (Dick) Iveland of Luverne, and Lorna (Don) Anderson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman De Jongh, of Luverne; and other friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick, on July 14, 2000; her parents, Charley and Ada; an infant brother; and four brothers, Pete, Wesley, Harvey and Chester De Jongh.

Memorials may be directed to the Minnesota Veterans Home or the Sanford Luverne Hospice program.
