Barbara Mary Vander Poel, 96, Luverne, died Monday, May 25, 2020, at Bethany Meadows in Brandon, South Dakota.
       A private family funeral Mass was Saturday, May 30, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne.
       Barbara Bauer was born Oct. 16, 1923, to Lambart and Mary (Fink) Bauer in Eden, South Dakota. She graduated from Lake City High School in Lake City, South Dakota.
       Barbara married Bertus Vander Poel on Jan. 28, 1953, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After their marriage, the couple farmed the family farm where Bert grew up. In April of 1992 the couple retired and moved to Luverne.
       She was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, the outdoors, and visits from her family.
       Barbara is survived by her son, Larry (Kathy) Vander Poel, Oakdale; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Steven) Silvera Lindemer, Forest Lake, Cynthia Vander Poel, Minneapolis, Deanna (Jim) Ekholm, Richfield, Adam (Lori) Vander Poel, Minneapolis, and Sarah Vander Poel, Minneapolis; twelve great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Evan, Cajsa, Onie, Jordan, Madelynn, Ian, Janaeyah, Nevaeh, Lamar Junior, Joseph, Andrew; and a sister, Sally Osiecki, Hartford, South Dakota.
       She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; a grandson-in-law, Shawn Silvera; and six siblings.
