Barbara Slieter

Barbara Joan “Barb” Slieter, 85, Norfolk, Nebraska, formerly of Hardwick, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at Homestead Assisted Living in Norfolk.

A funeral service was Monday, Nov. 20, at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. A graveside committal service was Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Memorial Garden Cemetery near Luverne.

Barbara Quantz was born Aug. 11, 1932, to Herbert and Josephine (Gazzano) Quantz in San Francisco, California. She attended school in San Francisco and graduated from St Paul’s High School in 1950. That summer she began working at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco.

In 1953 she married Allan Slieter. They moved to southern California, then the Sacramento area, Denver, and then Bingham City, Utah. In 1965 they moved to the farm near Hardwick, and Barb became a farm wife and raised five children there. From 1984 through 1986 she attended school at Minnesota West Community College in Worthington, graduating with a business degree. She went to work for Southwest Minnesota Opportunity Council in 1986 as an outreach worker for Pipestone County and retired in 1999.

Barb was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick since 1965. She played the organ for church services for over 30 years, had been a Sunday school teacher, an officer of the LWML, and was active in other activities. She enjoyed quilting with the group from church, playing cards with friends and family, and especially enjoyed getting together with her family.

Barb is survived by a daughter, Jeanette (James) Rutten, Norfolk; two sons, John (Jean) Slieter, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Randall (Susan) Slieter, Olivia; a daughter-in-law, Janet Slieter, Luverne; 25 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Marie Callahan, Burnt Ranch, California.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Allan; two sons, Robert and Dale; and a grandchild, Alene.
