Amanda Becker

Amanda Christina Becker, 99, Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids.

A funeral service was Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Little Rock, Iowa. Burial followed in the Bethel Reformed Cemetery.

Amanda De Buhr was born April 11, 1918, to Peter and Ella (Klinger) De Buhr in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She was raised in Dell Rapids. She attended Herman Township Country School and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1938. She continued her education and obtained her teacher’s certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Amanda taught country school near Little Rock.

On June 16, 1950, she married Harm Becker at the Bethel Reformed Church. The couple farmed near Little Rock. Harm died on April 23, 1957. Following his death, Amanda and her children moved to Rock Rapids. She worked many retail jobs in Rock Rapids over the years. Amanda also worked for many years at the Merrill Pioneer Hospital and became head of housekeeping until her retirement.

She was a lifelong member of Bethel Reformed Church in rural Little Rock. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery. She especially enjoyed visiting her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Becker, Storm Lake, Iowa; her sons, Harlyn Becker, Doon, Iowa, and Arlyn Becker, Rock Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Aaron (Joni) De Vos, Cherokee, Iowa, Carissa De Vos and Bridget (Cory) Vaudt, all of Ankeny, Iowa, Rachel Becker, Hartford, South Dakota, Robin (Scott) Eggink, Belle Plaine, Iowa; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (John) Van Aartsen, Rock Rapids; and other relatives and friends.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harm Becker; three brothers, Calvin and his wife Pearl, Herman and his wife Ethel, and Elmer and his wife Alma; and two sisters, Margaret and her husband Weert, and Christina and her husband Joe.
