Bernice Kathryn Willems, 89, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at Sanford Care Center in Vermillion, South Dakota.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory in Sioux Falls, with burial at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St Leo's Cemetery in Pipestone. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the funeral home.
Bernice Kathryn Johnson was born April 15, 1929, to Arthur C. and Leona H. (Hemmer) Johnson in Sioux Falls. She attended Pipestone High School and graduated in 1947, later going to Watertown Business School.
She married Robert Willems in 1947. After business school, Bernice worked at Pawnee Company in Pipestone and then worked at Blue Mound Inn for seven years. After moving to Sioux Falls, she worked for the state of South Dakota at the Rehab Center for the Blind for nine and a half years. She then worked at Aerostar until her retirement.
She attended St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls and was a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge, and Center for Active Generations. Bernice loved dancing to polka music and enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by five children, James (Donna) Willems, Sioux City, Iowa, Roger (Janice) Willems Northfield, Kenneth (Patti) Willems, Huntington, West Virginia, and Jylan (Reid) Matteson and Michelle (John) Hancock, all of Sioux Falls; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Johnson, Arizona; a sister, Marilyn Eilertson, Omaha, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Leona Johnson, Pine Brook, New Jersey; and other relatives and friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her son Douglas Willems; a grandson, Mike Willems; a granddaughter, Vanessa Willems; and her brother Raymond Johnson.
