Boys blank Willmar in section opener

The Luverne Cardinal boys opened the Section 3A Hockey Tournament by skating to a 6-0 victory over Willmar at the Blue Mound Ice Arena Thursday.

Top-seeded LHS scored all six of its goals in the first two periods of play and outshot No. 8 Willmar 52-11 in a one-sided contest.

Nick Harder and Declan Beers led the offensive charge by netting two goals each, while Coy Gonnerman and Harder registered four and three assists respectively.

On the defensive side of the ice, goalie Daniel Tofteland recorded an 11-save shutout.

Harder got things rolling for the Cards by registering a goal 3:15 into the game before making it 2-0 with a power-play tally that came with 8:54 remaining in the first period.

Jim Erickson upped the lead to 3-0 at the 6:47 mark of the first period before Kasyn Kruse capped a four-goal opening stanza with 3:31 left.

Beers put the game away by scoring twice in the second period.

The senior forward recorded a power-play goal with 8:06 remaining in the period before netting the game’s final tally with 4:32 left in the stanza.

Trey Roberts added two assists to the winning cause, while Jacob Von Tersch and Tyler Reisdorfer chipped in one assist each.
