Dick Edward Richters, 79, Luverne, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery near Luverne.
Dick Richters was born on Aug. 17, 1938, to Diedrich “Dick” and Edna (Winter) Richters in Luverne. He was raised on the family farm just south of Luverne and attended country school through the eighth grade. Dick then went to work right away as a farmhand for a neighbor. When he turned 17 and passed his commercial driver’s test, he went to work for Farmer’s Union Co-op in Luverne.
On Sept. 9, 1961, Dick married Carol Overgaard at Zion Lutheran Church in Luverne. The couple lived in Luverne until Feb. 1, 1963, when they moved to a farm six miles south of town where they lived for 55 years. Dick’s passion was farming; he first began working with his father and later with his sons. Throughout the years he did custom field work, corn shelling and mixed his own feed. Dick formally retired in 2007 but enjoyed helping out and working as a handyman for his children, grandchildren and good friends on an array of projects. He especially enjoyed working with his good friend, Roger Vogt.
Dick was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Dick enjoyed bowling in his early years. He also enjoyed square dancing, rarely missing a dance. Dick enjoyed putting together puzzles in his free time.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carol; eight children, Rick (Lynn) Richters of Luverne, Randy (Paulette) Richters of Luverne, Ron Richters of Worthington, Rodney (Laura) Richters of Luverne, Sherry (Steve) Paulsen of Steen, Kari (Jim) Kueter of Hills, Ryan (Connie) Richters of Hudson, South Dakota, and Susan (Tony) Lund of Canton, South Dakota; 25 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry (Bette) of Sauk Centre and Roger (Charyl) of Outing; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
