Meetings

Luverne Lions Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at the Luverne Pizza Ranch. Visitors are welcome.
Town and Country Garden Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the American Reformed Church parking lot in Luverne to carpool to the Dayton Avenue Orchard 4 miles south of Adrian on Highway 91. Call 507-597-6378 for information.
Caregivers Support Group will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Society in the conference room. Anyone deaing with caregiving or with questions regarding resources is encouraged to attend.
Rock County DFL will meet at 7 pm. Thursday, Sept. 28, in the Health and Human Services Building on Roundwind Road. All are welcome.

Library offers Fall Story Hour and Laptime 2017
Fall Story Hour at the Rock County Library in Luverne is from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 21-Nov. 16 for pre-school children ages 4-5. There is no story hour Oct. 5. Call 449-5040 to register.
Laptime, for ages birth-3 with an adult, is from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Fridays, Sept. 22-Nov. 17. There is no laptime on Oct. 6. No registration required.
Both Storyhour and Laptime are filled with stories, songs, crafts and fun.  Call 449-5040.
 
Library book sale runs Sept. 21-23
The Friends of the Library will host their annual book sale open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thurday, Sept. 21; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22; and for the bag day special from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.
 
Food ministry Sept. 21
New Life Celebration Church monthly food ministry will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Luverne Senior Center for those having trouble putting food on the table. Please bring a box or bags for food. Children are asked to wait outside. Call 283-4366.
 
Leaders Partnering to End Poverty Kick-off Sept. 21
Leaders Partnering to End Poverty (LPEP) will host their kick-off event of a year-long leadership program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Grand Prairie Events, 105 South Estey Street, Luverne. An evening condensed version is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the same day.
The workshop will be led by nationally known speaker Jodi Pfarr. A free lunch and free child care are available but preregistration is required. Contact ATLAS of Rock County at 507-449-5777, and check Luv1LuvAll facebook page.
 
Cub Scouts sign-up meeting Sept. 21
Sioux Council BSA invites interested boys in grades K-5 and their parents to a School Night for Scouting from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.
Cost to join Cub Scouts is $43 per boy, which covers registration and insurance through January 2019. No one will be turned away because of cost. Those who sign up will receive a “Hero Scouts” Frisbee. More information is at www.heroscouts.org or at 605-361-2697.
 
Weekend events at Blue Mounds State Park
Build a Bison: From Hooves to Horns — Help a naturalist "build" a bison by transforming an audience member through dress-up. Meet at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, in the amphitheater and bring a camp chair or blanket, as seating is limited.
Historic Quarry Hike — Join a guided quarry hike on the south end of the park at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. The hike is less than a mile, slow-paced and for all ages, but some areas require stepping down. Meet at the climbers parking lot, second parking lot on County Road 8. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.
 
Chord-Ayres at Palace Sept. 24
St. John Lutheran Church will host a free concert by the Chord-Ayres at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, in the Palace Theatre, Luverne, in celebration of the church’s 125th anniversary. The men’s choir, which is in the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, is a group of men from western Minnesota that performs patriotic, gospel and other music. A freewill donation will be accepted for the Rock County Food Shelf.
 
Bloodmobile in Luverne Sept.  25
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Luverne from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday Sept. 25, in Grace Lutheran Church.
 
Free community meal at UMC
The Luverne United Methodist Church invites the community to a free meal beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the church.
 
Grief Support Group begins Sept. 28
Sanford Luverne Hospice will begin a five-week grief support group Thursday, Sept. 28. The sessions are from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Blue Mound Room at Sanford Luverne Medical Center. The meetings are free, confidential and are open to anyone in the area grieving the death of a loved one. Pre-register at the Hospice office or by calling 507-283-1805.
 
Actors needed for minor roles in GEP production
Actors are still needed  for minor roles to complete the cast for the Green Earth Players production of “Miracle on 34th Street.” For more information, contact Bruce Kurtz at 712-229-7616.
Rehearsals are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the GEP building, 401 E. Edgehill St., Luverne. The production dates are Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 16-19 at the Palace Theatre, Luverne.
 
Walking Military Memorial downtown
More than 40 Luverne businesses are participating in a Walking Military Memorial on Main Street. The displays, presented by Remember Rally, include photos, banners, information and uniforms, as a way to thank all our military. Displays will remain until fall.

Community Ed and Rock County Library invite children birth to 5 years and parent/grandparent to register for Story Walk the evening of Sept. 28.  There will be hands-on activities. Registration required for this free activity.   
Kids in the Kitchen (grades K-6) will cook up apple treats at Apples Galore! Sept. 28.  Fee is $18 or sign up with a friend and pay $28.
Students age Kindergarten and older will get to experience a cross country race firsthand plus meet the LHS cross country team at Runnin’ for Fun Sept. 29. Fee is $5.
Defensive Driving The next full eight-hour class is Nov. 6 and 13.
