Lena Joan Madison, 74, Brandon, South Dakota, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A celebration of life with famiy was Saturday, April 29, at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon, South Dakota. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Lena Joan Schiebout was born April 10, 1943, to Henry and Bertha (Davelaar) Schiebout on a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa. She graduated from Edgerton High School. She attended nursing training in Rochester and worked at Luverne Community Hospital for 34 years. She married Charles Madison in 1964. They lived in Columbus, Nebraska, in their early marriage and then made their home in Luverne before moving to Brandon, South Dakota, in 1994.
Lena spent much of her time traveling to see her grandchildren and children and hosting family gatherings. She also enjoyed traveling with Charles on business trips. She played fast pitch softball for the IBP team. She and Charles enjoyed winters in Arizona in their retirement. She had lifelong friends to walk, talk and shop with and showed much kindness to people and animals.
Lena is survived by her husband, Charles; two children, Thomas (Jill) Madison, Kansas City, Missouri, and Tamara Rowden, Ft. Collins, Colorado; two grandchildren, Savannah and Samuel Rowden; four siblings, John (Barb) Schiebout, Edgerton, Cora (Harold) Vander Ziel, Sioux Falls, Beth (Jerry) Wieman, Luverne, and Helen (Haru) Takeda, Los Alamos, New Mexico; a sister-in-law, Henrietta Schiebout, Milaca; and several nieces and nephews.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Chris Schiebout.
