Sylvester “Sy” Lonneman, 88, Adrian, died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.
A funeral mass was Monday, March 27, at St. Adrian Catholic Church in Adrian. Burial was in the St. Adrian Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Adrian American Legion.
Sylvester Lonneman was born Jan. 29, 1929, to Antone and Elizabeth (Weidert) Lonneman in Adrian. He attended St. Adrian Catholic School. Sy was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1951. He served 22 months during the Korean Conflict. Sy was wounded and spent five months in a hospital in Japan. He returned to Korea’s frontline and was discharged in March of 1955. Sy was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean War Medal.
Sy married Helen Wieneke on Feb. 1, 1956, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Adrian. The couple farmed with Sy’s brother Anthony for 17 years south of Adrian. They continued to farm with his family until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church and served as chairman of the Parish Board, chairman of the Financial Council, and the St. Adrian Knights of Columbus. He was also chairman of the Federal Landmark Board, an AMPI delegate, Nobles County Pork Producers delegate, and secretary of the Adrian Elevator Board and a member of the Adrian American Legion.
Sy enjoyed fly-in fishing trips to Canada, traveling through the United States, and golfing with his wife. Sy played baseball for many years and enjoyed playing poker. He also enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s events.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Lonneman, Adrian; seven children, Mark (Lori) Lonneman and Jerry (Connie) Lonneman, Adrian; Cindy Lonneman, Avon; Linda Lonneman (friend, Terry Worth), Sunrise Beach, Missouri; Kevin (Nancy) Lonneman and Ron (Leah) Lonneman, Adrian; and Allan (Valerie) Lonneman, Sioux Falls; 14 grandchildren, Aaron, Shaina, Kayla and Brady Lonneman; Tammy (Jon) Veld, Andrea (Erik) Kathman and Chad Lonneman; Andrew and Nate Lonneman; Mitchell and Baily Lonneman; and Chloe, Jacob and Dakota Lonneman; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Monarch, Sioux Falls; three brothers, Anthony (Rita) Lonneman, Adrian; Orville (Elaine) Lonneman, Sioux Falls; and Frances (Suzie) Lonneman, Adrian; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Dean and Tim; two sisters, Leona Lonneman and Rita Cook; and two brothers, Vincent and Joseph Lonneman.
