Forty-six tractors were part of a long parade of both old and new farm implements that assembled at Luverne City Park Friday morning for a ride around the county.
According to one of the organizers, Rodger Ossenfort, Friday’s event was a dry run for a tractor ride planned for next year’s 150th Anniversary celebration in Luverne.
The idea came up one day while he and Ken Vos were having coffee.
"We just thought let's do a pre-run this year to see how it goes," Ossenfort told the Star Herald for an Aug. 18 preview story. “Then we can hopefully get even more people next year.”
The two men joined with Jerold Mann, who has participated in similar tractor rides in Iowa, and they began planning Luverne's first tractor ride.
They were hoping to get at least a dozen or so entries, but they said they were pleased to see 46 from all over the tri-state area.
The ride was open to all tractors — new and old; the only requirement was that they be able to keep up with a 10- to 12-mph pace and last for a trip around the county.
Participants gathered at the Luverne City Park at 8 a.m. and departed at 8:30 under sunny skies and mild conditions. A registration fee of $25 included breakfast in Magnolia and lunch in Hardwick after traveling through Kenneth.
