Robert Miller was born Nov. 26, 1942, to Darrell and Esther (Horstman) Miller in Cherokee, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Bob graduated from Marcus High School and later attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, as a pre-vet student.
He was drafted into the United States Army and served as a medical lab technician in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. After the service, Bob went to auctioneering school and farmed with his father. In 1968 he took a job with John Morrell & Co. as a hog buyer. For the past twenty years he bought cattle. He traveled to sales in Texas, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Bob married Cheryl Kramer on Oct. 12, 1968, at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. After their marriage the couple lived in Magnolia. In 1972 they moved to a farm north of Magnolia for twenty years before moving to a farm south of Rushmore. In 2011 they moved to Luverne. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne.
Bob’s lifetime dream was to be a cattle buyer. He loved the thrill of buying a million dollars’ worth of cattle in a day. All of the long days and nights on the road took a toll on Bob’s body, especially sitting in a car for 80,000 miles a year. Bob met many good ranch people, and he loved their way of life.
Bob is survived by his wife, Cheryl Miller, Magnolia; two sons, Brett Miller, Magnolia, and Michael (Laura) Miller, Lakeville; six grandchildren, Andrew, Seth, Gabbi, Kate, Jenna and Myles; two brothers, Brad Miller, St. Louis, Missouri, and Brian (LuAnn) Miller, Marcus, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Darlys Miller, Marcus, Iowa, and Dorral Guzman, Donna, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Alan Kramer, Kenneth, and Kevin (Shelly) Kramer, Marshall; and many nieces and nephews.
