Luverne American Legion team open season

The Luverne American Legion baseball team opened its season with five games this week.
On Tuesday, June 7, Luverne traveled to Fulda and earned its first win.
The Legion team then traveled to Yankton Friday and Saturday to compete in the Lewis and Clark Wood Bat Tournament. 
The young Cardinal squad battled good competition and very hot weather during the tournament and lost four games. 
The Legion record now stands at 1-4. Luverne hosts Edgerton Friday night and Worthington Tuesday. Both games are at Redbird Field.
 
Luverne 18, Fulda 7
Luverne’s first game of the season was a road game that lasted just six innings in Fulda June 7. 
The Cardinals had no trouble getting on base when Fulda pitchers walked or hit more than twenty batters.
Kaden Ericson picked up the win for Luverne on the mound. He pitched the last two and one-third innings with no hits and no runs and struck out six Fulda batters. 
Offensively for Luverne, Jake Olson was two for two at the plate with three RBIs. 
Connor Sandbulte, Declan Beers and Connor Crabtree each scored three runs in the contest.

SF East 9, Luverne 1
Luverne opened the Yankton tournament by playing two games Friday. 
In the first game, the Cardinals lost to Sioux Falls Post 15 East in a five-inning contest.
Cole Bosch pitched the first three and two-thirds innings for Luverne. He had four hits, gave up eight runs, walked eight batters and struck out one. 
Beers then came to the mound and gave up two hits, one run and one walk. He struck out three batters.
Beers led the offense for Luverne with two hits from three plate appearances and one RBI. Nick Overgaard scored Luverne’s only run in the game.

Renner 11, Luverne 1
Nick Overgaard pitched the first four and two-thirds innings of Luverne’s second game of the day on Friday.
He issued five hits, four runs, six walks and struck out one batter. 
Olson then came to the mound for one and two-thirds innings and gave up five hits, seven runs and four walks. Crabtree came in for the last two-thirds of an inning and struck out two Renner batters. 
According to coach Barry Shelton, the game conditions were extremely hot and the heat impacted the game. The final score was Renner 11, Luverne 1. 
Ericson scored Luverne’s only run of the game.

Yankton 7, Luverne 5
On Saturday Luverne faced the home team in Yankton in a six-inning contest. 
Ericson pitched the first three innings of the game. He gave up six hits, seven runs and five walks while striking out two Yankton batters.
Beers and Ben Serie each pitched one inning and gave up no runs. 
Chase Johnson was two for three at the plate for Luverne with one RBI. 
Will Mumme, Charlie Reisch, Serie, Johnson, and Jade Smith each scored one run for the Cardinals.

Norfolk 9, Luverne 0 
Luverne lost its final game of the Yankton tournament 9-0 when they took on Norfolk, Nebraska, Saturday.
“The game was a lot closer than the score appears,” Shelton said. “It was just one inning that did us in.”
Ericson was two for three at the plate. Bosch also had one hit for Luverne. 
Nick Harder pitched three and one-third innings for the Cardinals. 
According to Shelton, Harder pitched three very good innings before running into trouble in the fourth inning. 
Beers replaced Harder at the plate.
