EHS girls complete season

The basketball season came to an end for the Ellsworth girls last week.

The Panthers posted win overtime win over Hednricks Feb. 23 in Ellsworth to finish a 5-18 regular season.

EHS bowed out of the South Section 3A Tournament by dropping an opening round game against Westbrook-Walnut Grove Thursday in Ellsworth, ending a 5-19 campaign.

 

W-WG 55, Ellsworth 51

The Panthers were unable to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals after dropping a four-point game to the Chargers Thursday in Ellsworth.

The seventh-seeded Panthers sported leads early in the game, but No. 8 W-WG moved in front in the final five minutes of the first half and never lost the lead the rest of the night.

EHS led 6-0 after Megan Popkes converted a field goal 3:21 into the game, but W-WG countered with a 7-1 spurt to knot the score at seven at the 12:58 mark of the first half.

The score was tied at 20 when the Chargers reeled off seven consecutive points to open their biggest lead (27-20) of the first half.

A three-point play by Ellsworth’s Sierra Smith trimmed the difference to two points (27-25) with 42.8 seconds remaining, but the Chargers nailed a three-point shot before the buzzer sounded to sport a 30-25 advantage at the intermission.

W-WG never led by more than six points in a competitive second stanza.

Ellsworth trailed by one (32-31) when Smith completed a three-point play 2:41 in the second half and the Panthers still trailed by one (47-46) with less than four minutes remaining.

An 8-3 spurt by the Chargers upped the lead to six points (53-47) with 37 seconds left, setting the stage for a four-point victory at game’s end.

Popkes (19 points and seven rebounds), Smith (19 points) and Hannah Kramer (11 points and five assists) led the Panthers statistically.

EHS 44, Hendricks 43

The Panthers finished the regular season by posting a one-point home win over the Grizzlies in overtime Feb. 23.

After trailing 13-12 at halftime, the Panthers opened a six-point lead late in the second half before Hendricks hit a pair of three-point shots to knot the score at 32 and force overtime.

EHS outscored the Grizzlies 12-11 in the extra session to secure its fifth win of the season.

Ashlyn Meester (17 points), Smith (13points, nine rebounds and three assists), Popkes (13 rebounds), Kalle Chapa (six rebounds) and Kramer (three assists) led the Panthers to victory.
