More than 50 people participated in the Sanford Luverne Hospice 2015 Tree of Lights ceremony Thursday night, Dec. 3.
The ceremony at the corner of Highway 75 and Main Street was the first time in the event’s 20-year history that it was conducted at the city of Luverne’s new Flag Park.
“It was our largest group attending the lighting, and despite the chilly temps, there were many positive comments of the tree being on Main Street,” said organizer Helen Saum. “Overall we felt it was very successful.”
Standing around a 14-foot balsam fir in the 19-degree temperatures, participants listened as 330 names of loved ones were read as the tree was lit.
The tree was decorated with colored lights in remembrance of or to honor loved ones, living or deceased. The Tree of Lights is a fundraiser for Sanford’s hospice program.
Similar tree-lighting ceremonies were conducted indoors in Edgerton with 66 names read and in Adrian with 113 names.
The last ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at Tuff Village in Hills.
