To the Editor:
I have been hearing tidbits of things, disturbing things about our beloved Carnegie Cultural Center. And now after reading the article in the paper I am shocked that this has deliberately been kept from the general public. As a longtime resident of Luverne, I feel that we, the residents of Luverne, have every right to have a voice in what is going on with the Carnegie Cultural Center.
How do the changes that need to be made fit in with the National Historical Registry requirements?
It will take a lot of changing and expense in order to make it serviceable for the prospective use. (What is Main Street Music and who owns it?) As a resident, this expense will be passed on to me, and I don’t want it said that I helped destroy such a beautiful landmark. There surely are other buildings that would be better suited to changes and less expensive, or put the money into repairing their present facility.
Andrew Carnegie funded the building of this structure in 1903 as a library and in 1992 it was changed to the present use Carnegie Cultural Center. If plans continue, it will be used for private purposes and no longer available to the public to view and enjoy.
This matter needs to be addressed to the public openly and honestly before the final decision.
