Well, both the Rock County Pheasants Forever banquet and the Minnesota pheasant hunting season opener have come and gone since my last column.
To give you an update, the local Pheasants Forever chapter hosted one of its most successful events in recent years.
Credit for that success goes to the hard-working committee that plans for months and to the tremendous support the local chapter receives from local businesses that sponsor the banquet and the event.
The Rock County Pheasants Forever chapter is currently working on a habitat management project of current wildlife management areas as well as always looking for ways to expand those areas.
As far as the pheasant opener goes, one’s success depends on how he measures his success.
Let’s face it — with a daily bag limit of two birds per hunter, it’s not the bird count that really matters. The bird in the bag count is sure to go up once the corn has been harvested.
For most hunters, if you can get together with family or friends for the opener, that’s the first step to a great opener. Second, if you have dogs and the dogs do their thing, you’re on your way to a great day.
Third, if you are lucky enough to find a bird or two, that’s frosting on the cake. If you manage to harvest one of those birds, you get to eat your cake as well.

The Fabulous Armadillos will perform at the historic Palace Theatre on Friday, Oct. 23. That is less than two weeks away, and if you haven’t got your tickets yet, that begs the question: What are you waiting for?
Those of you who attended the Fabulous Armadillos Eagles Tribute concert a couple of years ago will remember how great that was.
Eight very talented musicians, including the blind guy, will be on stage to bring us the greatest in Stadium Rock hits for the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
Tickets are going fast. The lower level is nearly sold out, but there are a number of good seats left in the balcony.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Spirits will be available as well as pop and water.
The remaining tickets on the lower level are reserved seats and go for $35. The balcony seats are $25 each. Tickets are available at the Palace Box Office at 102 East Main Street.
