Franklin D. Wulf, 82, Chula Vista, California, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in Chula Vista, after battling cancer for nearly 10 years.
A military honors service was Thursday, Aug. 20, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California. Cremains were scattered at sea following the service.
Franklin Wulf was born Nov. 13, 1932, to Henry and Mildred (Long) Wulf in Lyon County, Iowa. He attended rural schools in Lyon and Rock counties. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1950. On Nov. 13, 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Franklin attended Naval Cadet School in Pensacola, Florida, and was commissioned lieutenant upon graduation. He spent the next 20 years as a Navy pilot. He flew patrol bombers and trainers. He was also a flight instructor for nine years. (Sen. John McCain was one of his students.) After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he attended college in San Diego for four years. Afterward he bought an auto business where he repaired, showed and sold collectible and vintage cars.
He enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening, crossword puzzles and vintage cars.
Franklin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruby Wulf, Chula Vista; three children, Kimberly Blankenship, Oklahoma, Karen Maggoira and Franklin S. Wulf, both of Chula Vista; five grandchildren, Katie, Jesse and Micah Blankenship and Lindsey and Annie Maggoira; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald Wulf, Sioux City, Iowa, Henry Wulf, Brainerd, and Gordon Wulf, Wellston, Oklahoma; four sisters, Elzora Ott and Naidine Aanenson, both of Luverne, Audrey Munro, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Ruth Hendrickson, Citra Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Arthur Wulf and a sister, Leila Wulf.
