Peter John “Pete” DeBoer, 89, Steen, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the Rock Rapids Health Centre in Rock Rapids, Iowa.
A funeral service was Monday, Aug. 24, at Steen Reformed Church with burial at the Eastside Cemetery in rural Steen.
Peter DeBoer was born May 4, 1926, to Joe and Engelina “Lena” (Noy) DeBoer in Hull, Iowa. The family lived on a farm north of Rock Rapids along the state line. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Peter served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.
On Aug. 14, 1953, he married Jane Jansma in Ellsworth. The couple lived in the Ellsworth area from 1953 to 1970, near Rock Rapids from 1970 to 2001 and in Steen from 2001 to 2014.
He was a member of the Steen Reformed Church. He was a member of the Rex Strait Post No. 103 American Legion and also a member of the Rock County Cattlemen’s Association, where he served as president. He greatly enjoyed fishing with his family at Lake Mary near Alexandria.
Peter is survived by two daughters, Jolene (Richard) VanDenBrink and Patricia (Todd) Loger, all of Rock Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Diane DeBoer, Rock Rapids; six grandchildren, Joel (Melanie) VanDenBrink and Joni (Randy) Ymker, all of Rock Valley, Iowa, Benjamin DeBoer (friend Kristi Oeding), St. Louis, Missouri, Adam (Kelly) DeBoer, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, TJ Loger and Trent Loger (fiancée Sadie Knobloch), all of Steen; five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, William (Harriet) Jansma, Ellsworth; two sisters-in-law, Wilmyna Jansma, Hull, Iowa, and Berniece (Noralf) Barstad, Brandon, South Dakota; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane DeBoer; a son, Brent DeBoer; an infant brother, John DeBoer; a brother, James DeBoer; a sister-in-law, Gertrude; and two brothers-in-law, Tunis and Bart Jansma.
