•With lush fields and a longhorn cattle herd serving as backdrop, area Catholics celebrated the upcoming harvest season with a special mass led by Bishop Bernard J. Harrington.
John and Awanda Siebenahler opened their farm Monday morning to more than 500 parishioners from the Diocese of Winona.
 
20 years ago (1995)
•An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Luverne has hospitalized more than 21 people since Sunday, and four others have apparently died from complications involving Legionnaires’ symptoms.
The earliest death traced to Legionnaires’ disease was in July, though health officials aren’t yet sure that death is related to the three since Sunday.
 
50 years ago (1965)
•The Administration’s proposal to raise the minimum hourly wage to $1.75 and extend this coverage to thousands of added rural businesses was criticized by Congressman Ancher Nelsen (R-Minn.) in a statement to the House of Representatives last week.
 
75 years ago (1940)
•With threshing operations nearly completed in all parts of the county, farmers have begun to give more serious thought to the corn crop now reaching maturity. Although rains last week were beneficial in most instances, many of the farmers feel that it arrived too late to be of any great value.
 
100 years ago (1915)
•With practically only half of the building season of 1915 past, there are now eighteen new residences in various stages of construction in Luverne. What is more gratifying, there is not one among them that is not of such substantial character as to constitute a distinct improvement to Luverne — the city that justly lays claim to more beautiful homes and fewer abodes that might be termed “shacks” than any other city of twice its size in southern Minnesota.
