Here come the thumbs … for recycling perpetrators, clean streets, unkempt lawns and more

The Star Herald this week doles out thumbs up and thumbs down on topics ranging from street beautification to recycling contamination.
Thumbs up — to the Rock County Agricultural Society for putting on another great fair. It had a great variety of things to do, see, hear and eat, and the improvements at the fairgrounds made everything look great and function smoothly. Of course perfect summer weather didn’t hurt, either.
Thumbs down — to impatient drivers in construction zones. We’re all in this together, guys. Please take turns and take your time.
Thumbs up — to progress on the Highway 75 construction. If nothing else, it’s been educational to watch the process and marvel at the technology involved in milling off and putting down a new street surface.
Thumbs down — to distracted drivers. Put the phone away. We can’t say it enough.
Thumbs up — to Luverne’s continued focus on improving the looks of the community. A couple more abandoned houses were demolished this past week, and more are on deck.
Thumbs down — to a handful of residents on West Warren Street. You get a nice new street with fresh curb and gutter at no expense to you, but yet you can't mow your lawns to help keep the street looking nice for the neighborhood.
Thumbs up — to timely rain. We’ve suffered enough drought in recent years to appreciate every drop, especially when it arrives gently — not in torrential, damaging storms.
Thumbs down — to Rock County residents who contaminate our recycling collection system with dirty diapers, dog feces and broken appliances. Officials are narrowing their search to perpetrators using a couple of rural drop-offs, and hopefully they can be stopped before this wonderful service is discontinued for rural residents.
