Star Herald doles out thumbs for green spaces, construction driving and shooting the messenger

 
The Star Herald isn’t lacking this week for topics that warrant thumbs up and thumbs down.
Thumbs up — to local town celebrations. Luverne enjoyed great weather for its annual Buffalo Days celebration, and last weekend Hills enjoyed a proud weekend in the spotlight for its 125th Anniversary and Friendship Days events. Keep your eyes on the calendar for upcoming town parties, like Hardwick’s Jubilee Days on June 27.
Thumbs down — to impatient motorists in construction zones. We will all benefit from the result of the work on South Highway 75, so let’s please keep our eyes on the prize.
Thumbs up — to the construction work finally underway. Plans for this Highway 75 project have been in the works for over two years, and many wonderful improvements — including green boulevards, sidewalks and safer traffic patterns — will result.
Thumbs down — to shooting the messenger. News outlets are obligated to cover both good and bad news, and sometimes bad news is hard to see in a community paper. But please, readers, if you don’t like the coverage, consider how it came to be news in the first place.
Thumbs up — to local public works crews and others responsible for a really great-looking Luverne City Park and Redbird Field. Of course, we can thank Mother Nature for timely rains (rather than floods) for the lush green spaces, but these facilities — like other local landmarks — make our community look really good and reflect positively on the town for visitors and passing motorists.
Thumbs up — to the perseverance of our state park staff to continually monitor its water quality issues while offering visitors an inviting area to visit and attend special events such as the recent Concert on the Prairie.
