Six Luverne track athletes earn trip to state championships starting Friday

Six Luverne High School boys earned the right to compete at state during the Section 3A Track and Field Championships Thursday in Luverne.
The LHS athletes automatically qualified for the state meet by winning three section championships and placing second in three events at the section level.
The state meet is set for Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
LHS seniors Trenton Rops and Jackson Winter combined efforts to win three section championships for the Cardinals.
Rops took top honors in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles with respective 15.45 and 40.82 times.
Winter, who qualified for state by finishing second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.82, won the 100-meter dash in 11.35.
Senior Payton Stemper also earned a berth in the state meet by placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.38.
Luverne also will send its 3,200-meter relay to the state meet after the squad placed second with a time of 8:31.43 at the section event.
Seniors Drew Weis, Ethan Marshall and Stemper and sophomore Jeremiah Dooyema formed the relay squad.
Rops, Winter and Stemper participate in preliminary races in their events on Friday with hopes of advancing to the finals on Saturday.
The 3,200-meter relay is set for Saturday in St. Paul.
With the state qualifiers leading the charge, Luverne placed second as a team at the section meet with 86 points.
Montevideo claimed the team title with 100 points.
Logan Stratton made a bid to advance to state in the shot put before placing third in the event with a distance of 46-8.
Stratton also placed eighth in the discus with a toss of 133-8.
Luverne’s 800-meter relay fell one place short of advancing to state after finishing third with a time of 1:34.07.
Winter, Rops, Cyris Halverson and Mitchell Muller formed the team.
Other individuals to turn point-producing efforts at the section meet include Matthew Hup (fifth in the pole vault, 11-0), Marshall (fifth in the 1,600 in 4:57.77), D.J. Reker (sixth in the discus, 137-6), Weis (seventh in the 800 in 2:07.9), and Mitchell Muller (seventh in the 110 hurldes in 16.81 and eighth in the 300 hurdles in 43.48).
Luverne also placed sixth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:41.56.
Stemper, Weis, Marshall and Dooyema formed the team.
Here is a look at the rest of the results turned in by LHS athletes during the meet.
 
Ninth place: Brandon Winter, 400, 54.94; Dylan Thorson, shot, 41-7 ¼.
10th place: 400 relay (Halverson, Tanner Wiese, Hup and Griffin Ahrendt), 47.69.
15th place: Ahrendt, triple jump, 36-7 ½.
