LHS softball team sweeps set from RWV
The Luverne softball team completed play in the Bib South Conference Small School Division with a 3-7 record after sweeping a doubleheader from Redwood Valley in Redwood Falls Friday.
Luverne took Game 1 by a 6-2 margin and plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a 5-4 victory in the finale.
The Cardinals and RWV were tied at two after five innings of play in the opener.
LHS settled the issue in the top of the sixth, when Brianna Jonason delivered an RBI triple to ignite a four-run rally that propelled the Cardinals to victory.
Rylee Olson pitched all seven innings in the opener to earn the win. She fanned 10 batters and yielded seven hits.
Olson led the Cardinals at the plate with two hits, while Jonason, Alexis Hiller, Ariel DeBeer, Susan Thompson, Katie Kracht, Bryanna Wessels, McKenzi Wenninger and Madi Oye chipped in one hit each.
Luverne faced 2-0 and 4-2 deficits before rallying to win the second game.
The Cards knotted the score at four by plating single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before producing the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh.
Hiller singled, stole second and scored the winning run when Olson doubled.
Hiller, DeBeer and Thompson registered two hits each at the plate, while Olson, Zayna Hustoft and Kaitlyn Roberts added one hit each to the cause.
DeBeer worked all seven innings on the mound to secure the win. She surrendered eight hits and fanned four batters.
