Cardinals down Trojans Thursday
The Luverne baseball team plated eight early runs to set the stage for a 9-6 home win over the Worthington Trojans Thursday.
Worthington took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, but the Cards bounced back to outscore the Trojans 8-1 over the next four innings to open a commanding 8-3 advantage.
Luverne moved in front to stay with a four-run rally in the bottom of the first featuring RBI singles from Connor Crabtree and Jaxon Nelson, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Tommy Vajgrt and a sacrifice fly from Joe Sommers.
The score was 5-3 when catcher Jakob Olson singled and his courtesy runner, Omar Martinez, scored on a balk in the third inning.
A three-run rally including a two-run single by Olson and an RBI single from Vajgrt upped the lead to 8-3 after four innings of play.
WHS scored two runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh, but the Cards countered with an RBI single from Olson in the sixth to prevail by three runs at game’s end.
Connor Hoffman pitched four innings of eight-hit, four-run, five-strikeout ball to earn the win.
Crabtree tossed the final three innings, surrendering two runs, three hits and four walks.
